WHAT TO DO

Mountain Pose is the foundation pose for all standing postures, and one that your child can use to center herself before attempting other poses. With Mountain Pose, children often mistake the pose as a stiff pose, rather than a strong, stable one. It is important that children be relaxed yet strong in the pose to reap its benefits.

WHAT TO SAY

Stand up tall and strong with your arms at your sides and your feet about hip-distance apart. Look straight ahead to find a focus point in front of you. Take a deep breath in and draw your shoulders up to your ears. Now exhale to round them back and down. As you exhale, imagine your feet are the base of the mountain, pushing into the ground with all of the weight of the mountain above it. Relax and breathe in and out normally 3 to 5 times.

Stable Mountain or Tin Soldier?

Children often get “stiff” while practicing Mountain Pose—keeping their shoulders up near the ears and forgetting to breathe. To help them engage in the pose without tensing up, try this. Nudge your child’s shoulder as you say, “Are you a mountain or a tin soldier?” If she’s being a tin soldier, she will likely lose balance and fall over. Playfully shake your child’s shoulders to relax them, encouraging her to raise them up and down as she exhales. Breathe deeply with your child to model. Try nudging your child again so that she feels in her body that she’s a stable, strong mountain.
